Juvederm is a facial filler that uses hyaluronic acid to reduce the appearance of moderate and severe wrinkles and folds on the face, décolletage, and hands. Juvederm is a smooth gel, which is injected into wrinkles and gently massaged into place. In addition to filling in wrinkles, facial fillers such as Juvederm are used to plump the lips, raise scar depressions, and replace lost volume. As a person ages, her body slows the production of collagen, a substance responsible for the soft full appearance of youthful skin.
Dr. Jehangir consults with patients before beginning any Juvederm injections. She discusses the patient’s expectations, goals, and closely examine the face to determine if Juvederm will address the patient’s concerns. The treatment begins with a thorough cleansing of the patient’s face. Over the next 20-40 minutes, Dr. Jehangir makes several injections of the Juvederm gel, resting between each injection to gently massage the skin and monitor the progress and effectiveness of the injections. Some patients may request a topical anesthetic, but most do not find the injections painful. As with other cosmetic injectables, there is minimal downtime required after treatment. In fact, many patients schedule these treatments during their lunch hour, only requiring that they avoid any excessive or strenuous activity for the rest of the day.
Patients start to notice the effects of Juvederm treatments immediately after treatment. There may be some mild swelling and tenderness immediately after treatment, but it recedes within a few hours. Juvederm facial filler treatments typically last for 6-18 months. Many patients opt to use Juvederm in combination with other cosmetic treatments such as Botox® and other skin treatments to maximize the appearance of youthful healthy skin. Juvederm is FDA approved and is a safe and effective treatment to reduce the appearance of aging and other cosmetic skin concerns. As with all injectable cosmetic treatments, patients are encouraged to take good care of their skin with an effective skin care regime including the daily use of a high SPF sunscreen, even on cloudy days, and avoiding prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.
